We have created a series of public maps on Google maps to illustrate the Birding locations we have described on this website.  By using the interactive features of Google maps, you can learn much about the location you plan to visit and get detailed driving directions.  We encourage you to complete this tutorial.

Caution:  Dial-up Internet Connections may not be fast enough for you to successfully use the Google Map capability.

Make notes or print these directions.
Choose a Google Map link.   (Example:  McNary NWR)
Follow the directions below.
(Mac users – Ctrl click instead of right click)

Use the zoom feature (in any of these four ways):

  • In the upper left hand corner, click on the plus or minus sign to zoom.
  • Use the sliding bar (left click and hold) to move the marker.
  • Double click on the map
  • If your mouse has a wheel, this also serves to zoom in and out.

Centering or moving the map (any of three ways):

  • Right click and choose “Center map here
  • Use the 4 directional arrows in the upper left
  • When the hand symbol is showing on a map, left click and hold , move your mouse

Change from road map to satellite view:  Click on appropriate button in the upper right

Get directions from your house or any other location (do all of the following steps):

  • Right click on where you want to go and choose “Directions to here”.   (Google Maps puts in a green marker – this marker can be dragged/moved)  NOTE:  If the birding destination is not on a road, Google Maps will get you as close as the nearest street.  You may wish to print the maps to follow to off-road destinations.
  • Go to the upper left of your screen and fill your address or current location in Box A (From)
  • Click “get directions”
  • Also, once you click on a feature, there is the option to “get directions to here”.

Markers or lines are used to label roads, parking area, or location names.  Read notes for a marker or line either of these ways:

  • Click on the marker or blue line on the map
  • Click on the labels (in blue) that are on the key on the left hand side

Once you have gone to a link, you can get to all the maps created for the webpage.

  • Go to the menu on the left and click on By lcbaswebmaster.
  • You can save them to your own Google Maps collection.
