From Dana Ward
Chairman, Christmas Bird Count
The Lower Columbia Basin Audubon Society held its annual
Christmas Bird Count on Saturday, December 30.
Three individual count areas comprised the traditional 7.5 mile radius count circle.
This year's count was a record breaker with what looks like 112 species
tallied in the Dec. 30 census. All of the regularly listed
"common" birds were found and a lot of the more uncommon species as
well.
Unusual birds included:
Great Egret
Osprey
Glaucous Gull*
Anna's Hummingbird*
Mountain Bluebird*
Peregrine Falcon
Golden Eagle
Pine Grosbeak*
Chukar.
*These specieis were relocated on Jan. 1, 2007 as well.
Many thanks to those who worked on this Count:
Dennis Rockwell - coordinated Kennewick
Barb & Tom Clarke - coordinated Pasco
Bill and Nancy LaFramboise - coordinated Richland
Phil Bartley - contributed expertise as past compiler
Dana Ward - compiling final data
The number of
birds seen
of each species during the day long count were tallied and forwarded
to the National Audubon Society to be incorporated in their 107 year
old database. This database is the largest wildlife database in the
world and is vital for determining the status of expanding and
declining bird numbers.
And thanks to those who
travelled from other areas to participate: Mike & MerryLynn
Denny, Kerry Turley, and Guy McWethy.
Plan to join us next year!
